Its central location in Martinsville’s business district renders the Historic Henry County Courthouse square a valuable green space. This is especially true since the New College Institute and community theatre are moving into and renovating other historic buildings around the square. Working in conjunction with the city to restore the courthouse grounds, the new brick plaza is now a gathering place for students and citizens, and is accessible to all visitors. The Civil War era cannons were relocated and reseated in historically appropriate carriages, and newly planted trees and shrubs complete the picture.
